Westgate Brewery, Bury St Edmunds

Beer advertisements were somewhat more refined in the early 19th century, as this entry from the Bury & Norwich Post shows:

May 28th 1806
Messrs Buck and Greene of Westgate Brewery at Bury, beg leave to respectfully inform the public that they will be ready by the 1st week in June to execute any order they may be favoured with for table beer and shortly afterwards for Porter and Old beer.

The 1823 Pigot's Directory lists Buck & Greene as brewers (Westgate st).

The 1830 Pigot's Directory lists Benjamin Greene as a brewer at 1 Westgate st.

The 1839 and 1840 Pigot's Directories lists Edward Greene as a brewer (Westgate St).

The 1844 White's Directory lists Edward Greene as a brewer (Westgate St).

The 1855 White's Directory lists Edward Greene as a brewer (Westgate St).

A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 25 May in 1855 states that :

Mr Edward GREENE is auctioning the following public-houses, he having determined to have no tied custom:
The Railway Tavern, near the Station, Bury, occupied by Mr Jas. GARWOOD
The Green Man, Bardwell, occupied by Mr FULLER
The Five Bells, Brandon, occupied by Mr Robert SNARE
The Half-Moon Inn, Mildenhall, occupied by Mr Edward MUSK

The 1865 Kelly's Directory lists Edward Greene & Son as ale & porter brewers & maltsters (Westgate St).

Listed in 1874.

The 1900 Kelly's Directory lists Greene King & Sons Ltd as brewers, maltsters wine & spirit merchants & mineral water manufacturers (Westgate Brewery & at Stowmarket).

The 1912 Kelly's Directory lists Greene King & Sons Ltd as brewers, maltsters wine & spirit merchants & mineral water manufacturers (Westgate Brewery & at Stowmarket, Haverhill, Colchester, Fakenham & Bocking)

The 1922 Kelly's Directory lists Greene King & Sons Ltd as brewers at the Westgate Brewery & at Stowmarket, Haverhill, Sudbury, Bocking & Sutton (Ely)
