About Harkstead

Harkstead is a quiet village close to the north bank of the River Stour, with good walks to Holbrook Bay. It was recorded in Domesday as "Herchesteda". An inscription on the post of the village sign (erected in 2014) reads "In memory of those who have passed this way". Perhaps an interesting story behind it?

It's said that there was a red-light district in Harkstead in the latter years of the Second World War, presumably to keep the military busy...

Arthur Ransome was a one-time resident of Harkstead Hall.
