Thornham Magna

Introduction

A picture postcard village set beside parkland of Thornham Hall. The hall was damaged by fire in 1955 and reduced in size to just one wing. Thomas Killigrew was a former inhabitant who was thrown out of Venice for "being too debauched even for that place!". Later he founded Drury Lane theatre, where he spent his time writing indecent plays. The Hall is now a house and study centre with rural crafts and nature trails.

The remnants of a post mill (possibly 17th century), burned down in 1959, are visible north of Workhouse Road

The Stoke Ash White Horse is sometimes listed as being in Thornham Magna.

The village was recorded in Domesday variously as "Tornham", "Martonham", "Thornham", "Marthorham", "Thorham" and "Torham".
