About Wenham Magna

A spacious settlement lying just off the A12, recorded in Domesday simply as "Wenham". May also be historically listed as Great Wenham.

Nearby Wenham Parva has virtually disappeared except for a church and a fine 13th cent. brick built and fortified Hall - possibly the earliest English brick built building still in use as a residence.

Matthew Hopkins, the notorious Witchfinder General, was born in the parish some time about 1620. His father was the local vicar.

In 1952, a Roman lead coffin encased in a wooden one was found at Priory Farm, along with 3rd-4th century pottery and glass.
