Beccles Horse & Groomhistorical era: mid 20th century
closed between 1937 and 1969?
55 Caxton Rd
A pub appears at this location as late as the 1927 OS map, but seems to have gone by the 1969 sheet (those available in between are not sufficiently detailed) so it seems likely the pub closed between those dates. It seems to have been relatively short-lived as a pub, as there isn't even a building at this location on the 1884 OS town plan or any map up to 1890. It only appears (as a pub) on the 1905 sheet.
A pub of the same name (on New Market) was closed in 1880 as a report in the Ipswich Journal** in Sep 1880 states that :
The license for this house was not renewed at the last licensing day as it was being used as a private house. The magistrate's certificate had been issued in the past to Messrs. Morse and Woods but in the future certificates would only be granted to occupiers of the house.
The pub is shown (but not named) on this old OS map from about 1903 (larger map)
The license was transferred between the two houses.
