The White Horse was built late in the 16th or early in the 17th century. Known locally as "the Morgue"; it had a reputation as something of a rough pub[1].

George Crickmore, a farmer, was found guilty of being drunk and disorderly and refusing to leave the White Horse when requested, he was fined £2 10s and costs of 8s. He was also found guilty of assaulting a police officer (at the same time and place) for which he was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labour, and 8s costs…
