Historical interest
Policeman George Frost saw Edward Spendler at the back gate to his house, the King’s Head Inn, at 1am. He asked him if he could go in and have a look to check all was well. He found two men both very drunk and one lying on a sofa. Spendler told the officer that he didn’t wish to harbour the men and he hadn’t taken any money from them. Spendler was found guilty but as it was his first offence he received a mitigated fine of £1 and 10s expenses. Ipswich Journal, March 1870**
