The 1904 Woodbridge licensing records show that the Volunteer's beerhouse license was issued in 1868.

Certain tradesmen and others organised an invitation Ball at Wickham Market, at which a fair sprinkling assembled, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves up to an early hour the next morning. A band was engaged from Ipswich and Mr George Hill, of the Volunteer Inn, supplied the refreshments in capital style. Ipswich Journal, March 1875**
