Parts of the building date from the 16th century, though much has been subsequently added.

To the rear of the building, not visible from the road is a grandstand dating from the early 17th century. The building gets the rare Grade II* listing because the grandstand is thought to be the only surviving example of a grandstand associated with innyard entertainment.
