A couple of "good ol' local boys" (about 80 years old) told me at a village function a couple of years ago that they remember a second pub in settlement. I think they said it was the Black Horse (not sure), they pointed out the building and the property is on the other side of the road to the White Horse set well back from the road and almost behind the village hall.from John Alborough

Note: if John (or indeed the "ol' local boys") is correct, then our map location and photograph are incorrect. There doesn't seem to be any obvious building in the area described though. Curiously, where we show the Black Horse is shown on the modern OS map as "Black Horse" and it's now called Black Horse Farm, but earlier maps show neither that annotation or any sign of an inn.

The Hoxne licensing records show that the license wasn't renewed in 1958, though curiously the following news report shows that the pub actually closed towards the end of 1955.

An old-established inn, the Black Horse at Syleham, will soon be no more. At Hoxne court yesterday, when a protection order in respect of the White Horse inn (also at Syleham) was granted to Eric Sparrow from Wm Collins, the district manager for Messrs Steward & Patteson. Mr S H Beales said his firm had bought the White Horse from Messrs Lacon. They intended moving Sparrow, who was the licensee of the Black Horse, into the house within the next week or so. They would then close down the Black Horse and surrender the license.Evening Star, October 6th 1955**
