A popular local haunt for good value food and beer.
A Victorian brewery was based here. The pub was built in 1844 for Lord Bunbury, who wanted to keep his workers where he could keep an eye on them rather than them going into Bury for a drink.

Barton Hall is the seat of the Bunbury family and the buildings history dates back to the end of Elizabeth I reign. However the original Barton Hall was destroyed by fire in January 1914. Charles, the 8th Bunbury Baronet, was High Sheriff of Suffolk in 1868. He died childless in 1886 and was succeeded by his younger brother, Edward, the 9th Baronet. He was Liberal Member of Parliament for Bury St Edmunds. He died unmarried in 1895 and was succeeded by his nephew, Henry, the 10th Baronet. He served as High Sheriff of Suffolk in 1908 and was a Deputy Lieutenant of the county. Charles, the 11th Baronet was High Sheriff of Suffolk in 1936 and was a Deputy Lieutenant of the county. His son, William, the 12th Baronet, was High Sheriff of Suffolk in 1972. His son, Michael, the 13th Baronet, has held the title since 1985.
