Thorpeness Cross Keyshistorical era: Victorian / Edwardian
The Cross Keys is listed in Thorpe which was originally listed as a hamlet of Aldringham.
In 1855, John Ralph was at the Cross Keys and in Morris County Directory for 1861, Maria Watson is the owner. From local records, a George Gowing owned the Crown, prior to 1858. Were there 2 public houses, i.e. the Cross Keys & the Crown. or did one of them replace a much earlier establishment called the Chequers and did the Cross Keys eventually become the Crown?Inns of the Suffolk Coast, Leonard P Thompson, 1969
Note: we know that the Crown became the Dolphin, but Thompson's question as whether the Cross Keys was an older name for that or a different pub is still unanswered.
