Sudbury Golden Lion

also traded as as: Lion, Red Lion?

historical era: Victorian / Edwardian

13 North St

Overview | Historical info

I have a copy Will from 1689 by my 9th Great/Grandfather James Dearing (or Deering), bequeathing the “Golden Lyon” to his infant grandson Dearing Dansie, via a life interest to the testator’s daughter and son-in-law. James died shortly afterwards. Within 30 years, Dearing Dansie had moved full time to Castle Hedingham and I do not know what became of the family’s interest in the pub after that. However, Dearing’s son Deering also became a victualler, as did his great grandson Crown Dansie and others in the family.from Ian Jones

The building has since been demolished.
