The majority of pubs have now reopened after the latest lockdown, albeit still with restrictions. Many pubs currently have temporary trading hours; these are shown where known. We also show pubs we know have still not reopened as temporarily closed.

Please note that due to the pandemic currently being allowed to run out of control, many pubs are having to close temporarily due to staff or customers getting "pinged". Please check with the pubs if you plan to travel any distance.

Thorpeness Chequers Inn

Thorpeness Chequers Inn

Closed before 1840

A Tithe Map of 1840 shows the Chequers Inn Yard, which was a small off-licence beer house, some 200 yards from the present Dolphin. It was once owned by John Cobbold.Inns of the Suffolk Coast, Leonard P Thompson, 1969**

Footnote

The chequerboard as a pub sign may have its origins from Roman taverns when a board game like draughts was often advertised and played. It may also be an ancient sign to indicate the landlord was a money-lender or could offer secure storage for a travellers valuables.
