Historical interest
Martha Smith, keeper of the Bricklayers’ Arms beer house, California, was charged with keeping her house open in prohibited hours. A policeman found a man drinking in Smith’s house on a Sunday morning; she told the officer that she had supplied the man with a drink as he had walked a long way that morning. She was convicted and fined 10s 6d and 9s costs. Ipswich Journal, Feb 1870**
