The Plough & Sail is listed in Foundry Road, St Margaret's parish, which a believed to refer to Old Foundry Road.
The reference to the Plough & Rail in the Ipswich Journal in 1860 is uncorroborated at present. We do not know if it is a genuine pub name from that time or a spelling mistake. Please let us know if you know any more.
Historical interest
Marquis Cornwallis Inn is listed in St Margaret's Street in 1851.
Thomas Hope, landlord of the Plough and Rail beer house was charged with keeping his house open in prohibited hours to wit at half past seven on a Sunday morning. Hope pleaded guilty explaining that four of the gas men had been working all night and came in and begged for a pint. Policeman Edmunds confirmed that there were gas men present and the works were close by. Superintendent Mason confirmed that the retorts were unloaded on a Sunday morning and that he knew the landlord and considered his beer house to be well conducted. The Magistrates under the circumstances of the case were not disposed to convict. But the defendant must not in future, under any pretence, allow his house to be open in prohibited hours…
