Beccles Horse & Groom
Beccles Horse & Groom
52.45713,1.5633
closed September 1880
Horse & Groom Ln or New Market
grid reference TM 421 903 (approximate location)
Closed roughly September 1880, when the license transferred to a new Horse & Groom on Caxton Road.
A Smith's paper "Inns of Beccles in 1929" (kindly supplied by Daryl Ling) tells us that this inn was "at the back of Mr Took's confectioners shop". It isn't clear which side of Horse & Groom Lane the inn was, since no maps showing it have been found.
A report in the Ipswich Journal** in Sep 1880 states that :
The license for this house was not renewed at the last licensing day as it was being used as a private house. The magistrate's certificate had been issued in the past to Messrs. Morse and Woods but in the future certificates would only be granted to occupiers of the house.
