In 1844 this was listed as a posting inn.
According to Alfred Hedges' book, "Inns and Inn Signs of Norfolk and Suffolk, the present building was constructed some time after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, on the site of an earlier inn called the Ram, which itself replaced an even earlier inn whose name is unknown.
Died on the 25th, at Newmarket, aged 51, William Bacon, fist post-lad at the Rutland Arms Hotel.Ipswich Journal, April 1870**
In 1922 it was listed as a first class family hotel with garage & billiards; near golf links.
