In WW1 the pub was home to C Company 2/6 of the London Regiment and it narrowly avoided being destroyed in a bombing raid by a Zeppelin on March 31st 1916 when 8 high explosives and 19 incendiary bombs were dropped on the town. Houses in East Street were destroyed, killing four people outright and one soldier who died a few days later.
