Mayhew, William
Ash Rd, Hemingstone
In 1855 White's Directory Wm. Mayhew is listed as a brewer.
In 1861 census in Ash Road William Mayhew/67y/Master brewer emp. 2 men 1 boy/Stutton.
Ash Road cannot be found on maps of the village, but there is a house called "The Ashes" on Lower Road, so perhaps that was an older name for this road? There's a "Brewery Farm" on Lower Road, close to the boundary with Ashbocking, so perhaps that marks where this brewery used to be?
A local historian speaking on Lesley Dolphin's BBC Radio Suffolk programme reported that a brewery (presumably this one) operated in the village from 1840 to 1869.
