The 1823 Pigot's Directory lists Elph & Browne as a brewer & wine & spirts merchant.
A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 19 Apr in 1826 states that :
The Brewery, Estate & Stock of Messrs ELPH & BROWN at Lowestoft to be sold by private contract. The Estate consists of a Brew-House, Tuns Rooms, Store Rooms, 2 Malting Offices & other necessary appendages, a modern-built Dwelling House with Wine Vault & Spirit Warehouse adjoining; and 21 Well-Accustomed Inns & Public-Houses...An old-established & profitable Concern.
