Ipswich Lord Chancellor Inn
Ipswich Lord Chancellor Inn
closed 31st December 1914
10-12 Greyfriars Rd
grid reference TM 162 441 (approximate location)
The closure date is recorded in the Borough Police licensed premises register 1903-1923. It seems likely the pub has been demolished, though we have yet to identify its precise location.
The pub has also been listed variously at Crown Lane (1844), at Friar's Street (1855) at Friar's Road (1871) and at Grey Friars Road in 1888.
A pub is shown on the 1892-1905 OS map in roughly the right place, though it isn't clear if this is the Bath Tavern or the Lord Chancellor:
Historical interest
John Chittock, 49 a pattern maker, walked into the Lord Chancellor and held out his hand to James John Butcher the landlord and said " I've done it, murdered my wife." In fact his wife Matilda survived the attack, receiving horrific wounds with cuts from her mouth and stab wounds to the neck. The couple had been legally separated after he had hit her and he was paying 10s maintenance a week a sum he could not afford. He was found guilty of wounding with intent and sentence to 18 months hard labour.Ipswich Journal, November 7th 1896**
