Introduction

The isolated and thatched church has a magnificent Norman doorway but no electricity supply, so a hand pumped organ and the hissing of Tilley lamps give it an air of the past at evening prayer. The River Hundred flows into Latymer Dam just to north of the settlement, which was recorded in Domesday as "Henestede".

The village has never had a pub, as such, though Henstead Hall was licensed, but apparently only for staying guests.

Henstead exotic garden is a paradise full of tropical plants that can be visited at various times (see the website for details).

Hulver Street (or Hulvers) is a small hamlet in the west of the parish which is sometimes included within Wangford Hundred (according to 1855 White's Directory). We have so far been unable to find a map showing the boundary between Henstead and Hulver Street, so only the parish boundary appears on our map.
