Wissett

Introduction

A village on the upper reach of the river Blyth, recorded in Domesday as "Wis(s)eta". The church was at one time the property of "twelve monks of Rumburgh priory". A Medieval pottery kiln has been unearthed near Chediston Road.

Valley Farm Vinyard (formerly Wissett Wines) is open daily for sales, tastings and tours. It also offers self-catering accommodation.

The 1844 White's Directory also lists William Woods as a brewer (& shopkeeper) and a beer house run by William Howlett.

The 1855 White's Directory also lists William Woods as a beer house keeper (& shopkeeper)

The 1851 Census also lists William Woods (Brewer, pub not named, Head/Married/38y/born Wissett) with Hannah Woods (Pub not named, Wife/Married/36y/born Huntingfield).

The 1874 White's Directory lists Richard Tacon as a farmer & brewer in Eye.
