Little Welnetham

A dry parish, sometimes spelled Little Whelnetham. We have searched records dating back to before 1840 without finding reference to a single public house in this village; it seems likely there has never been one. Please let us know if you have any information to contradict this.

For details on Great Welnetham see Sicklesmere. The Rushbrooke Arms is sometimes historically listed in Little Welneatham.

Welnetham Railway Station was on the Long Melford-Bury St Edmunds branch line. The station opened in August 1865 and closed in April 1961. Most of the station buildings have been demolished, apart from the old station house, which is now residential.

The Friary of Crutched Friars was in existence before 1274 and was dissolved in 1538. Chapelhill Farmhouse is on the site of the friary and retains some material from it.

Little Welnetham appears on John Speed's 1610 map as "Wheltham pua".
