Message from Stephen Govier: 49 Low Street Hoxne was the home of the Gilman family for at least 3 generations. My maternal grandmother Olive Maud Gilman was born here in 1903 as was my mother sister and myself. Olive's father was Arthur Gilman. The alehouse known as The Christopher is shown on the 1619 plan of the New Park of Hoxne Hall once the Bishop's of Norwich country retreat and palace. Hoxne was a place of pilgrimage for St Edmund and his shrine, it probably ceased working as an ale house in the 18th/19th centuries.

We have also examined all available Hoxne licensing records (1913-1968) without finding any further reference to this pub, we've also looked at all available OS maps (back to 1885) without finding it, so it probably closed before that year.
