Historical interest
This was originally a beerhouse called the Railway Tavern (as opposed to the Railway Inn, the modern-day Railway pub by the station). Licensing records trace the pub back to at least 1877 (the earliest available). It was originally licensed as a beerhouse and only got a full license on March 14th 1957.
It's not clear to us exactly when the name changed to the Cooper's Dip, but the 1972 telephone directory lists the Railway Tavern, whereas the 1981 directory lists the Cooper's Dip. So the change was presumably sometime in between.
From 1911 to 1931, the landlord was Francis Barker Cooper - perhaps the source of the pub's unusual name?
The pub closed and its license was suspended in February 2018 following allegations of an assault. The leasehold is now on the market…
