Introduction

Chilton is mainly made up of modern housing and industrial units on the outskirts of Sudbury. Chilton Hall was once a moated farmhouse and was the seat of the Crane family. Only one wing of the Tudor hall now survives; evidence for 7th century burials have been found in its grounds.

Chilton was recorded in Domesday as "Ciltuna".

The Maldon Grey has in the past been listed as being in Chilton, but today is located on the boundary between Sudbury and Great Cornard.

There may have been a now-deserted Medieval village at TL 890 423, though little evidence remains. An ancient deer park was recorded in the village in 1575. Two large brickworks were also once located nearby.
