A sarcophagus that was discovered during the demolition of a house built on the site of Sudbury Priory was used as a horse trough here for much of the 19th century, though it had been broken up by the turn of the 20th century.
The building dates from the 18th century and the pub is known to have been open before 1747, when it was advertised to let in the Ipswich Journal** as follows:
