The pub can be seen on this OS town plan from about 1880 (larger map).
The 1883 OS map shows the Orwell Hotel to have stood on the north-west corner of the junction between New Cut West and Bright Street. It was closed in 1961 as part of a long-standing scheme to reduce the number of "excess" alcohol licenses. It's since been demolished.
It's also listed at Griffin Road (1855) and Griffin Wharf (in 1865 & 1869).

PC Nunn went to the Orwell Hotel at about 8am Sunday morning and found two men in the back yard with a pint of liquor each, the landlord told the officer that the men were travellers one from Colchester the other from Braintree. The magistrates considered this a very serious offence and fined the landlord, William Francis Hender, 50s and 15s costs, and ordered his license to be endorsed. Ipswich Journal, Sep 1890**
