77 & 79 Fore Hamlet
grid reference TM 173 439 (approximate location)
This is listed at 77 & 79 in 1861, when the older Gardeners' Arms was still listed at 88. It's suggested that this stood roughly on the site of the current Gardeners' Arms.
Historical interest
After receiving anonymous letters, purporting to be from wives of men who frequented the Britannia Inn, Fore Hamlet, during prohibited hours, the police raided the pub. In the stables they found a man who claimed to be there to find a postage stamp, there were no mugs or beer to be seen. However, the police charge Edward Buckingham, landlord of the Britannia with serving during prohibited hours and unsurprisingly the case was dismissed. Ipswich Journal, July 1875**
