The pub can be seen on this OS town plan from about 1800 (larger map).
The Ship Launch has also been listed historically as being in Cliff Road.
For many years it was the closest pub to the Cobbold brewery. It finally closed for good late in 2010 after a long period of sporadic opening and closure.
For several years afterwards it was a Chinese restaurant, called the Golden Ship, which for a short while had a couple of keg pumps and supposedly had plans (which never came to pass) for Real Ale.
In 2022, planning permission to convert the pub to flats was granted.
