The pub was built early in the 18th century.
After closing it was used as a B&B for several years, but is now residential.
It's listed at 24 Bridewell Lane until at least 1874, 17 until at least 1892, and at 14 from about 1900.

A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 13 Jan in 1857 states that :
Freehold House & Cottages to be sold at the Half Moon Hotel, BSE by orders of the Executors of John SMITH, Gent. - A desirable Freehold Dwelling House & Premises, called "The Three Blackbirds" with cottage attached in Bridewell-lane in the occupation of Messrs. BRABROOK & LOMAS.Ipswich Journal, January 13th 1857** (not listed as an Inn but the name may indicate it may have been)
In 1937 the pub is listed in Kelly's Directory as one of 220 pubs that was retailing beer that they were brewing.
