Halesworth Golden Ball
Halesworth Golden Ball
South, 52.34333,1.49812
closed 20th July 1954
opened pre-1874
85 Chediston St
grid reference TM 383 774
The Golden Ball was originally earmarked for closure in 1909 under a scheme aimed at reducing the number of "excess" alcohol licenses, but it was decided not to close the pub then after all. In the end, it lasted until 1954.
It has been suggested that the numbering scheme may have changed and in fact our unidentified pub was in fact the Golden Ball. We need more information before this can be confirmed. That said, marks in the wall between the upstairs windows give the impression that a sign-hanger may have been attached there.

Historical interest
Mr Alfred Taylor of the Golden Ball, Halesworth, who is a carpenter and wheelwright had been at work in his shop until 7pm he retired at about 11pm. He was woken at about 1.30am by cries of fire, he discovered his workshop in flames, the fire brigade were quick to respond but the fire was not extinguished until it had completely destroyed his shop and its contents. The origin of the fire remained a mystery, the buildings were insured by the Sun Office, except the one in which the fire occurred. Ipswich Journal, Jan 1885**
