The building dates from the early 17th century, with 19th and 20th century alterations. The old sign pillar has been preserved in the garden, albeit without the sign. The building's identity is confirmed by the Listed Buildings Register.
The 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses list the Half Moon at [The] Green.

At the Hartismere Petty Sessions of June 1885, the license for the Half Moon Inn, Redgrave was transferred from Mr Edward Flowerdew, deceased to his widow. Ipswich Journal, June 1885**
