Closed: about 1970s
42 Mariners st
grid reference TM 550 939 (approximate location)
This is the same name but different location to another pub.
In the early 70's we used to go to chippy on Compass street (well I always thought it was Compass Street ) it was next to the Morning Star Pub (or next door bar one)on the corner just down from the Hemplands. I lived in Royal Avenue then and we (brothers and sisters) used to cut through the gap (I don't remember it being a proper roadway more like an alley or narrower road between the Hemplands and the Pub... to go to the Chippy..... they were great chips.....
Pub was demolished for the building of Jubilee Way.
(Info from Mary-Anne Bell)
Historical interest
In 1937 the pub was listed in Kelly's Directory as one of 220 pubs that were retailing beer that they were brewing.
