Historical interest
The pub is shown on this old OS map from about 1903 (interactive map)
The earliest reference to the Three Tuns is in 1742. In 1758, the inn was owned by Samuel Alexander (banker & Quaker). In 1761 it was owned by his son, Dykes Alexander whose own son William sold the pub to Joshua Head (an Ipswich brewer) in 1793. It was sold to John Biddle (a Woodbridge brewer) in 1817 and later sold to William & Harriet Tydeman in 1829. Fire destroyed entire building and two adjoining cottages in 1840. Robert Bomann (an Ipswich brewer) rebuilt the inn. Colchester Brewery bought the pub in 1898 and became subsumed into Ind Coope after 1926. The pub was closed for two years from 1988 to 1990.
