This was a long-established pub (dating back to 1871 or earlier), latterly trading as a nightclub called Eastern's Station Lounge. That was closed down in 2012 due to serious license breaches. Planning permission for residential conversion was applied for early in 2016; this was granted in September 2017.

At the Sudbury Petty Sessions on 03.10.1895, a temporary transfer of the licence for the Great Eastern Railway Hotel, Sudbury, from Mr BODGER to Mr Arthur DIGGINS, was granted.Ipswich Journal, October 8th 1895**
In the December 1982 edition of Last Orders*** it was reported that the Great Eastern was previously Wards and Charringtons owned but is now a Free House with handpumps.
