The cross-keys motif above the door of this building suggests it may perhaps have been a pub bearing this name. If you can confirm or refute this idea, or can provide any more information, please let us know.
Historical information for Cross Keys, East Hall Street (1881) and St. Mary Street (1891) has been included in the historical section.
Paul Womack tells us that the Suffolk and Essex Free Press (dated 14 Feb 1924, page 6) has a Melford licensing report from the local magistrate session. This states that the Cross Keys had been voluntarily closed.

Historical interest
The 1881 census lists the Cross Keys (schedule no. 587) between the White Hart (565) and King William (603) in East Hall Street.
The 1901 census locates a pub at the entry just before Swan Lane, which suggests that the photograph is the correct building.
Note: Albert Edwin Bevan is reported at the George & Dragon in 1916.
